Cathy Barber, PoetTeaching

Cathy Barber is a poet/teacher with California Poets in the Schools (CPitS) in San Mateo County. CPitS is a statewide organization placing poets in schools for over fifty years. CPitS poets are working poets in that they are actively writing and publishing their own poetry in addition to teaching student poets in school residencies. Lessons are designed to encourage student writing as well as enjoyment of poetry and enhancement of verbal skills.

Cathy has been teaching since 2003 and has taught in numerous schools in San Mateo County and beyond.  She has taught after-school programs in Highlands Elementary School, San Mateo, and Farallone View Elementary School,  Montara and library programs in the Burlingame and Belmont Libraries.  She has taught in classrooms in King's Mountain in Woodside, Meadows Elementary School in Millbrae, Cipriani Elementary School in Belmont, John Gomes Elementary School in Fremont and many more.  Her students have written delightful poems and many of her students' poems have been chosen for inclusion in CPitS annual anthology of student work.

A few comments from her students about writing poetry: "When I write a poem I feel...joyful." "You were such a good teacher." "I wish I could have this teacher every year." "What surprised me about poetry was...anything can happen in poems." "You were awesome here!" "What surprised me about poetry was...it expresses me and it tells about me." "When I write a poem I feel...proud of myself." "I love how Cathy Barber teaches." "Poetry in the Classroom is fun! I want it longer."

And a couple of comments from teachers: "Great job! Calm and balanced." "Cathy adapted her lessons to meet my students' needs and was very patient with my group."

She loves teaching students and is welcoming additional jobs.

"I have had the privilege of having Cathy Barber come to my classroom as a visiting poet to work with my students on writing some of their own poetry. What a pleasure it was to see my students create their own poems and share them with peers so willingly. All the children were interested and engaged. This was a wonderful experience for them."

Cathy Barber's poetry workshop at Burlingame Public Library was a wonderful addition to our annual Poetry Month celebration. With Cathy's thoughtful guidance, children listened to and talked about poems, and then wrote and read aloud their own verses. The enthusiastic participants even created a group poem in a spirit of good humor and cooperation. Parents and children have asked for more!
